PT PEMBANGUNAN JAYA came into being on September 3, 1961, in response to a mandate from Soekarno, the Republic’s first President, to the then Governor of Jakarta, Soemarno, to revitalize the city. With limited funding available, the Governor invited the private sector to become a partner in reimagining and rebuilding the city as a modern capital.

The result was PT PEMBANGUNAN JAYA, a joint venture between the regional government of DKI Jakarta, which holds 40% of the shares, and the private sector. Living up to its mandate, PT PEMBANGUNAN JAYA has played a key role in fostering Jakarta’s development as a modern metropolis since the first seeds were sown all those years ago.

Then known as PT Pembangunan Ibu Kota Jakarta, PT PEMBANGUNAN JAYA’s first task was to rehabilitate Pasar Senen, one of Jakarta’s busiest markets since it was established by the VOC (the Dutch East India Company) in 1733. PT PEMBANGUNAN JAYA successfully transformed the market, which had become a slum area, into a thriving, modern commercial center in what was Indonesia’s first ever public-private partnership project, long before the concept became widely known.
